In the coming days, our respective college teams of football, volleyball and badminton are going to return from IT-BHU after competing with colleges from different regions of the country. That is wonderful , judging by the amount of exposure and chances our sportsmen get here ; be it in the institute itself or open events in other places. This comes as a great opportunity for our college to make a name for itself.
But a tinge of irony, sadness and disappointment scoops in the fact the Basketball team has not been given this honour. This is a very negative step. Basketball is followed and played by a fair amount of people in the college. It has been said that our college team players are not in full shape to participate, have minimal fitness and fingers pointed to our players that they do not have the required talent to represent the college at IT-BHU. The college basketball team has done fairly well in recent years in numerous tournaments. They even won the KAALRAV 2013 competition. Yes, fitness and regularity IS A problem with the current crop of players; no denying that. But in talent, there is huge potential. Talent, which have been already tapped and used in the players’ former years but since have gone dormant due to the lack of opportunities here. A number of players in the team have played beyond their school or club levels and have got what it takes to perform at higher levels. What is lacking, is OPPORTUNITIES. Being denied chances like these not only destroys the very spirit but it also snatches away the NEED, the desire of the players to stay in shape, to push themselves. What is the point? They are not given the opportunity anyway.
It is very much possible that the team will not perform adequately this time, but it will create a hunger; a desire in the players to be better; seeing the other good players from different colleges. They will see what they are lacking. And who knows, maybe perform exceptionally in any other upcoming tournaments. What they need is the opportunities and not be written off as “not good enough”. As it is we don’t get enough exposure, to be denied the few ones that we have; that’s just such a huge morale buster.
